If you plan to spend the weekend in the city or are just wondering what to do in Sucre, consider a visit to Tarabuco Market, a colorful open-air market just outside of town. We offer a day tour of Tarabuco for guests traveling through Sucre, with transportation across the rolling countryside to the town of Tarabuco.
For the Yampara people on Bolivia’s central highlands, Sunday begins early, as people travel four to six hours to reach the weekly market. Each Sunday the quiet little town of Tarabuco becomes an epicenter of trade, buzzing with activity, with all kinds of goods for sale.
In Tarabuco, you will find quality artesanía as well as medicinal plants, fresh produce and the region’s distinctive textiles. Everything from colorful pullovers to intricate coca pouches feature the traditional geometric and zoomorphic designs of the Yampara culture. Walls of vibrant tapestries line the streets and stalls of the open-air market.
Travelers spend a couple of hours wandering the streets and enjoying the light-hearted atmosphere of Tarabuco. Expect to see men dressed in distinctive monteras, the colorful leather hats typical of the region. Women in the petticoats and bowler caps of the altiplano sit by their stalls chatting with friends and tourists.
Take a break from the lively market streets and lounge in the central square of Tarabuco, a great place to sit at a sidewalk table and enjoy a light lunch or a glass of chicha. Lunch is included with the tour.
